The Atrium of the Canterbury Hotel in the heart of downtown Indianapolis would seem an unlikely setting for the world premiere of "Woods" (2008) by Aaron Krerowicz. Yet, the openness and the sophisticated décor served to heighten enjoyment of this intimate, rustic work composed for a soprano and an ensemble of alto flute, clarinet, English horn, French horn, bassoon, baritone saxophone and percussion. Comprised of seven movements and an Interlude, Kerowicz says, "'Woods' is about being naïve ... the different movements, each exploit very different qualities of naïveté." While the music delivered its intended visualizations and aesthetics of experience in the moment, the text, drawn from the writings of Thoreau and Emerson, most often was lost once it moved from a cappella into duality of voice and instruments. Perhaps having the text printed in the program would have helped. As a work by a 20-something, it's ambitious and deserving of further exploration. The program opened with mezzo-soprano Lexa Ferrill, accompanied by pianist Kate Boyd, joyfully interpreting five songs by Ned Rorem. The two-minute smile-maker, "It's Just a Scale," composed by Krerowicz in 2006, did indeed engage the audience. Conceived and conducted by Andrew J. Lyon, this format of gathering after work for conviviality and an exhibit followed by music is a smaller, traveling version of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's highly successful "Happy Hour."
