Matthew Altizer received a bachelor of music in saxophone and bachelor of arts in music theory from Indiana State University. Upon completion of his undergraduate degrees, Matthew continued his studies at The University of Texas at Austin with a master of music in historical musicology/ethnomusicology. His master's thesis focused on American experimental/micro-tonal composer Harry Partch and his early compositions, life as a hobo, and his private journal Bitter Music written during the Great Depression. Matthew has also presented papers on a variety of topics including the writings of John Cage, the 19th century Ceclian Movement in Austria, Heinrich Schütz, the musical borrowing techniques of George Rochberg and Leonard Bernstein's use of anarchy in his compositions.
Upon completion of his master's studies, Matthew moved to Bloomington, Indiana and began work within the music industry. He has held a variety of positions at Pro Winds-Bloomington and was General Manager of Pro Winds-Indy. Matthew currently works as Director of Operations for Owl Studios, an internationally known jazz record label based in Indianapolis. He also assists with operations and other duties with the 2009 Indy Jazz Fest, scheduled for September 21-27, 2009. Matthew has performed in a variety of ensembles throughout his career, including the Terre Haute Symphony, Philharmonia À Vent, ISU Faculty Wind Ensemble, various saxophone quartets, and the Javanese Gamelan Ensemble Kyahi Rosowibowo. |
